SCAY Banquet reminder

If you are no longer on the SCAY swim team, would like to be deleted from the e-mail distribution list, or would like to update or add an e-mail address please send me an e-mail to let me know. If you know anyone who should be added to this list, please send me an e-mail to let me know.

Dear SCAY families,

A quick reminder that our banquet is this MONDAY, April 7, at 6:00 pm at the Park Forest Baptist Church, just off of Valley Vista Road behind where the new Lowe's is located.  The banquet is a lot of fun and a great way to celebrate the end of another season of swimming. Thanks to Terry Cummins, Ken Hillsley, Joan and Russ Schrock, and Phoebe Jordan it promises to be a wonderful event!

A great main meal will be provided by Clem's and we'll have cake for dessert. We are asking people to contribute drinks to round out our banquet--thanks in advance if you can help in this way.

And, this wouldn't be swimming if we didn't need  volunteers so . . . we are still looking for 3 or 4 volunteers who can arrive between 4pm and 5pm to help set-up for the banquet. Set-up includes tables, chairs, decorations and food.

Throughout the banquet, we hope that various volunteers can help make sure that food is served and replenished (please just pitch in if you see something that needs to be done.)

Lastly, we are asking everyone to stay at the end of the banquet to help with the clean-up. Our cleanup went amazingly quickly last year when everyone stayed and helped!

If you can help with any of the above, please let me know.

Thanks and see you all on Monday,
Yvonne

SInce some people need their order today to deliver to people at work etc. we're going to go ahead with pick up at the Y today starting at 3:00. If you can't make it to the Y today (please use your best judgment about the roads!) we'll have the rest of the orders at the meet tomorrow.

It does look like the weather will clear and we'll be able to hold Last Chance tomorrow. If this changes, Steve will send out an early morning email notifying people. Meet entries for tomorrow are attached.

And, in case you didn't get the information--all practices today are cancelled.

Thanks,

Yvonne

Reminder--district signups due Saturday (tomorrow)

February 19, 2008

THANKS!!! to everyone who helped with our KYSL Championship Meet last weekend. Thanks to the coaches, the swimmers, the parents, and all the volunteers. The meet ran smoothly and our swimmers swam wonderfully. It was a great way to conclude the regular season!

This Saturday is our Last Chance meet. As Steve explained in his email, this meet is for swimmers who are close to a district time, who are seeking to improve a district time, or simply want to get some more meet experience. Entries are due tomorrow (Wednesday) via a meet entry form. There is a limit of four individual events (there will be no relays) and all events are $3.00/event. See below for the event numbers

Warmups will start at 8:00 a.m. and the meet will begin at 9:00 a.m. Please have swimmers at the Y by 7:45 for stretching.

We’ll need volunteers for timing, seeding area, officials, etc. so please help out in whatever way you can—this helps the swimmers and helps us run a fast meet. Remember that our new, interactive volunteer sign-up form is on the web at http://www.aqualions.org/volunteers.php (Thanks to the people who've already signed up!)

I'm also asking that everyone who is planning on having a swimmer in the meet can contribute something from the list below. Please let me know what you'd like to contribute. And, please plan on sticking around for 15 minutes or so at the end of the meet to help with clean up. This will go really fast if we all pitch in.

Concessions Donations needed:
Large Gatorade-any flavor
3 dozen bagels
2 tubs of cream cheese
2 dozen donuts
2 dozen donuts
2 dozen donuts
Mini muffins (4 in a baggie)
Mini muffins (4 in a baggie)
1 large bowl pasta salad
1 large bowl fruit salad
Bunch of bananas and apples
Bunch of bananas and apples
3 pkgs. Hot dogs

of" senior shirt ( these were all grouped together.)

3. Towel - multi-colored with hexagon and stripes pattern.

Thanks,

Yvonne

KYSL warmup info etc.

KYSL Championship Meet this Saturday, February 16th: Keystone YMCA Swim League (KYSL) Championships are very different from the dual meets we have during the season (the size is closer to the two larger invitational meets that we held at SCAY.) It is a bigger meet since all KYSL teams participate, every Y swimmer who has participated in at least two league dual meets is eligible to compete at Champs, and there are no time standards for eligibility. There will be programs available for purchase at the meet and event line-ups will be listed in this program (you may want to bring a highlighter to mark your swimmers’ events.) Please note that there will be multiple heats for most events.

I know that some people were having trouble opening the entry file that Steve sent earlier this week so that information can be found at the bottom of this email.

If you ordered any SCAY wear—that order has arrived and you can pick it up from Cindy at tomorrow’s all team practice.  If you haven’t yet paid, then please bring a check payable to SCAY.

Schedule for the KYSL Champs meet:

Morning Session  (8 & Under and 9-10 Age Groups)

8:05 – 8:25 a.m.—Warm up in Lane 1,2
8:45 a.m.—Meet Starts

Afternoon Session (11-12, 13-14, 15-18 Age Groups)

11:30 a.m.—Warm Up  in Lane 1, 2, and 3

12:45 p.m.—Meet Starts

Please ensure that all swimmers are wearing a team swimsuit and a team cap, if a cap is worn. I’d also suggest bringing two to three towels and warm clothing (such as sweats) for swimmers to wear between events so that swimmers stay warm. There can be a long time between events so cards, games, music and books to entertain swimmers can come in handy.

If you ordered a Champs t-shirt, these will be available for pickup at the meet.

Because of the greater number of swimmers, meets are usually held in buildings with a gymnasium separate from the natatorium. The swimmers can proceed directly to the Main Gym where there will be signs indicating where they are to sit. Locker rooms will be clearly marked. The swimmers gather in the gyms before the meet and before and after their events. You may want to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets or extra towels to sit on in the gym. Events are announced in the gym and swimmers move to the seeding area and then are escorted to the natatorium. The gyms tend to be rather chilly and the waits between events can be long but it also is a fun time for team members to be together and for parents to socialize.

Directions to KYSL Championships meet (held at Brookville Elementary School):

*80 West

*Take Brookville exit #78 (Old Exit 13)

*At the bottom of the ramp go right

*Approximately 1/2 of a mile, maybe less, bear right -- be in the right hand lane; this is just past the Dairy Queen

*At the stop sign turn right

*The school is approximately 1/2 mile on the left; the pool is in the back of the Brookville Elementary School, the school nearest to where you come into the school grounds.

Note: In good weather allow about 1 hour and 30 minutes for the ride.

Good luck to everyone—have fun and swim FAST!

Yvonne

SCAY January 31st news

If you are no longer on the SCAY swim team, would like to be deleted from the e-mail distribution list, or would like to update or add an e-mail address please send me an e-mail to let me know. If you know anyone who should be added to this list, please send me an e-mail to let me know.

A reminder that we have a home meet against Brookville on Saturday—the D1 group is donating food for concessions and the D2 group will be taking care of clean up after the meet. Our warm-ups start at 8:00 (please arrive by 7:45 so that your swimmer(s) can be in the water by 8) with a meet start time of 9:00. Note: if you are planning on swimming at KYSL and haven’t met the two meet participation standard yet—this is your last chance. Meets that count for KYSL are Hollidaysburg, Juniata Valley, Ridgway, Brookville, Clearfield and Dubois. West Shore, Williamsport and Bloomsburg are not part of our league and therefore do not count towards the participation requirement. Please contact Steve asap if you still need to enter your swimmer for this meet (the coaches have been taking entries throughout this week.)

As always, we’ll need volunteers for the meet so please come prepared to officiate, time, hand out cards, etc. A sign-up sheet is posted at the Y but I'm also thrilled to announce our new, electronic signup on our re-designed website. Please take a minute to check out the website at http://www.aqualions.org/ --we'd appreciate any feedback on the website as we continue to refine and improve it. While you're checking out the website, you can also try out the volunteer section :-) You get to this by clicking on the "Meet Volunteers" link form the navigation menu on the left, then select the appropriate meet from the pull-down menu (for example, "Home vs Brookville" for this week) and click "Volunteer". Then, just enter your name in the slot you'd like to volunteer and hit the "Volunteer" button again. It's live--so your name will appear as a volunteer right away.

Also, since it looks like winter weather is heading our way tomorrow—a reminder of our inclement weather policyIn general, if school is cancelled or early dismissal is announced by the State College Area School District, practices will also be cancelled.  However, there are circumstances when, due to the early time frame (typically 5 a.m.), the decision to close or dismiss schools will not cause practices to be cancelled, particularly those in the late afternoon or early evening time frame.  For example, we’ve all seen days when the morning started out with bad weather but by mid-afternoon the roads were open and the driving was fine. This policy was created to address these types of situations

What we will make our best effort to do is to provide positive notification when practices will be held on days when school is cancelled or an early dismissal is announced. In other words, on days when school is cancelled or early dismissal is announced, practice will only be held if notifications are made via e-mail and the website (www.aqualions.org ).  Updates will also be provided on the SCAY Hotline (235-SCAY); please call the hotline if you are not sure if practice is scheduled. The front desk at the Y will also be notified if practice will take place, but please try to limit the number of calls to the front desk by checking the alternative methods prior to calling.  No individual phone calls will be to families made regarding cancellation or occurrence of practice.

School Cancellation:               Notification will take place by 2:00 p.m. only if
practice will be held; we will try to notify earlier.

Two-hour delay:                        Morning dryland will begin two hours late.

Late bus/activity cancellation:   Notification will take place by 2:00 p.m. only if
practice will be held; we will try to notify earlier.

Finally, a reminder that information about our Marianna Hoagies & Pizza fundraiser has been placed in everyone's mailboxes. Order are due by noon on Thursday Feb. 14th and the hoagies and pizza will be delivered on Friday Feb 22nd at the YMCA between 3:30pm - 7:00pm. This fundraiser is used to offset the costs of our spring banquet so it would be great if everyone could order something--even if it just for your family's dinner on that Friday night. Also, don't forget to please collect the money along with your orders. Thanks and see you on Saturday,

Yvonne

SCAY News for October 7th, 2007

I hope that you all have your calendars marked for our Intrasquad Meet and picnic that will take place this Sunday, October 14th . Beginning tomorrow (Monday), coaches will be asking swimmers if they will swim in the meet. All swimmers will be entered in all events. (Typically, swimmers swim different events throughout the season so that SCAY develops well-rounded swimmers.) If you won't be at a practice before Wednesday, please email Steve at spower@scaymca.org to let him know if you will attend the meet. Warmups will start at 12:30 and the meet will start at 1:00. This meet is a fun, practice meet, for the kids and the parents. It's a great opportunity to meet other parents and will give new swimmers an opportunity to practice swimming with touch pads at the finish. We will need volunteers during the meet for a variety of tasks: from moving tables (they're very light), to running cards, to helping swimmers get to the right places. Since this is an intra-squad meet, it is a good time to try out a new position or volunteer for the first time and help us all get ready for our season. Thanks!

Aqualaps is fast approaching—October 20th is suddenly right around the corner! This is one of two primary fundraising activities that we do (the other is running States.) We have a large capital commitment to the Y to help pay for the pool and so need to raise this money ($150 if you have one swimmer in your family; $250/family if you have multiple swimmers.) All swimmers who raise more than $500 become members of the “500 Club” and will receive recognition t-shirts. You should have received a brown envelope that contains all of the information and pledge forms. If you didn't receive an envelope with your Aqualaps materials they are in a box on top of the swim team wooden file cabinet in the lobby—please pick one up. If you have any questions, please email Joan Schrock at rosjmsva@adelphia.net

Some other key dates to mark on your calendar:

November 3: Halloween Invitational Meet @ Williamsport (all age groups)

November 10: Hollidaysburg “Block Party” Invitational Meet (all age groups)

November 16-18: Big Cat Meet at Penn State (requires USA registration)

November 18: Bloomsburg Area YMCA Swim Your Own Age Thanksgiving Meet (for swimmers 12 and under)

Are you interested in learning more about officiating and becoming a certified official? How to run meet manager on the computer? Or, how to run the Colorado timing system? If you are interested in doing any of these, please let me know and we'll work to set up training for you.

Finally, don't forget to register your swimmer(s) and pay your Y swimming fees a.s.a.p. This is really important since these fees pay our coaches' salaries and help set the budget for the year. In addition, if your child has switched groups you need to make that change at the registration desk since group fees are calculated according to the amount of pool time that swimmers receive.

If you have questions or need more information on any of the above, please contact me via e-mail at ymg100@psu.edu

Happy swimming!

Yvonne

SCAY News for September 27th, 2007

Finalizing team wear order: Attached you will find a spreadsheet for the team suit order to date. Please check your name and make sure that your suit size is listed correctly. If there is a problem, please let Cindy Linzell know ( dgl3@psu.edu ) ASAP. Also, Cindy will be at the pool tomorrow before and after the team practice for anyone who needs to try on suits or place an order. Tomorrow is the cutoff date for the first order of suits so if you need a SCAY suit for the fall meets please get your order to Cindy by tomorrow.
And, a clarification from Mary Beahm on the homecoming parade : The parade starts at 6:00 p.m. with the floats getting lined up at 5:00. The HS Swim Team float will be setting up in the North Building parking lot near the “Roar Store” sign – float #22. I'm sure the swimmers would love to see lots of SCAY swimmers there and along the parade route! The parade route is: The parade begins at the North Bldg Parking Lot Proceeds down Westerly Parkway towards Allen turns left at light Proceeds past Fairmount Avenue Turn left at Nittany Avenue All floats will disband at Central Office
Also, remember that practices for today (Thursday) are cancelled due to the homecoming parade.
Thanks,
Yvonne

SCAY News for September 26th, 2007

Practice Note: As Steve mentioned in his note, there will be no practices tomorrow, Thursday Sep. 27 due to the high school homecoming parade. All SCAY swimmers are encouraged to go to the high school Homecoming parade that starts at 5:00 at the North Building, to show support for the high school swim team that will have a float. WEAR SCAY GEAR!

It was great to see so many people at the Kick-off meeting! Special thanks to the SCAY Board for helping with the meeting as well as Cindy Linzell for her hard work with the boutique. It was also great to meet our new coaches and everybody ready to go for a great season! If you weren't able to attend the meeting, here are a few of the key points to get into the swing, since we're going to be off to a quick start:

Registration:

Please register your swimmer(s) by the end of this week. Swimming registration is handled by the front desk. Also, remember to have your swimmers show their Y membership card at the front desk whenever they come to practice. If you have 3 or more swimmers, there is a discounted rate, please make sure to remind the front desk staff. Finally, you'll need your swimmer(s) group assignment to register.

SCAY team wear:

If you are in need of SCAY swim gear such as a suit, cap, etc. a teamwear order form is attached to this email. Our first suit order will be placed on Friday September 28. If you need a suit for the beginning of the season you must place your order before that date. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Linzell at dgl3@psu.edu or call her at home at 861-3967.

You can place completed order forms (along with a check for the total amount, made payable to SCAY) in the file folder marked apparel in the SCAY wooden file cabinet (located in the corner of the front lobby, opposite the vending machines.) As a reminder: all swimmers must wear SCAY suits & caps for our meets (caps are optional for boys but if they do want to wear a cap it must be a SCAY cap.)

Aqualaps:

Aqualaps is fast approaching—October 20th is suddenly right around the corner! This is one of two primary fundraising activities that we do (the other is running States.) We have a large capital commitment to the Y to help pay for the pool and so need to raise this money ($150 if you have one swimmer in your family; $250/family if you have multiple swimmers.) All swimmers who raise more than $500 become members of the “500 Club” and will receive recognition t-shirts.

If you were at the kick-off meeting, you should have received a brown envelope that contains all of the information and pledge forms. If you didn't receive an envelope with your Aqualaps materials there are extra brown envelopes with the Aqualaps information on top of the wooden file cabinet. Please be sure to pick up you materials and start collecting those pledges. If you have any questions about Aqualaps, please email Joan Schrock at rosjmsva@adelphia.net

Mail :

We are in the process of updating the “mailboxes,” the folders in the top drawer of wooden filing cabinet in the front lobby. A yellow Emergency Contact information card will be put in your family's mailbox in the next week or so (if you didn't fill one out at the fall kick-off meeting.)

Please complete the Emergency Contact information card and return it to the folder marked for those cards in the filing cabinet as soon as possible. It's important that we have this information on file for each swimmer. If your form has any sensitive information, please place it in an envelope before placing in the folder.

Some key dates to mark on your calendar:

October 14: SCAY Intra-Squad meet (Noon – 4:00 p.m.)

October 20: Aqualaps at SCAY 1:00 – 4:00 (more information coming soon)

November 3: Halloween Invitational Meet @ Williamsport (all age groups)

November 10: Hollidaysburg “Block Party” Invitational Meet (all age groups)

November 16-18: Big Cat Meet at Penn State (requires USA registration)

November 18: Bloomsburg Area YMCA Swim Your Own Age Thanksgiving Meet (for swimmers 12 and under)

Steve will be providing updated information on USA registration, so if you are interested in joining USA swimming, stay tuned for more details. YMCA meets do not require USA registration, so it is optional to join USA swimming. There is an additional fee required for USA registration for meets outside of the league such as Big Cat meets at Penn State.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail at ymg100@psu.edu or Coach Steve Power at spower@scaymca.org .
