Shouts from Steve - August 31, 2010

August 31, 2010

Good Tuesday Morning:

We had our first SCAY Board for the 2010-11 season meeting Sunday night.  The August meeting is at our house (though my wife, Kelli Hoover, is the main reason this meeting is so fun - we meet and then have dinner.  (I hope this is enticing you to consider being on the board in the future.))  We have a wonderful board that is very interested in making sure we do the best we can for our swimmers.  As the season goes on please make sure that when asked by our board to volunteer for the many and various jobs that need to be done to help our kids, you respond in a positive way.

I was recently asked what is the difference between 'Juniors' and 'Seniors' in the JR/SR group.  Juniors are those who are too young to try out for the high school team, are not going to try out for the HS team, or do not make the HS team.  Swimmers who are planning on trying out for the HS team should register as a Senior; if they do not make the HS team, then you will need to go to the Y and make the financial adjustment.

JR/SR Dryland over the next week looks like this:

    Wed, Fri (9/1,3) 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. at the Y

    Mon (9/6) 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. at the Y (I will bring food for afterward)

Wed (9/8) begin regular morning DL schedule (6:00 - 7:15)

I met with some of the kids coming to dryland and they indicated they wanted our Fall/Winter dryland to start at 6:00, so this will be the case.

JR/SR swim practices begin Tuesday, September 7.  They will swim from 3:40 - 5:00 p.m.  Our Stroke Clinic will be from 5:00 - 6:00. As in the past I am asking that at least 5-6 JR/SR swimmers stick around to help with the Clinic.  All practice groups start on Monday, September 13.

I will get our met schedule out very soon.  Most weeks I will be sending out a note, which I usually try to on Tuesdays.

We will have a parent meeting on Sunday, September 12, 2:00 p.m., at the Y.

More soon.....

Shouts form Steve - August 22, 2010 Groups/Fall Practice Schedule

August 22, 2010

Good Sunday Morning:

I will be listing this year’s groups, practice times and fees.  We have decided to not increase fees from last year to this.  In response, I hope everyone will register their swimmers as soon as possible.  Swim team registration begins tomorrow at the Y.  The list of swimmers will be at the front desk.  Only swimmers on this list will be able to register, and only in the group indicated.  Should your swimmer not be on the list, no need to panic; if you think your swimmer is not listed in the correct group, no need to panic.  These situations occur each year.  The best way to take of these situations is to give me a call at home – 231-0340.  I am normally home during the middle of the day.

My considerations in group placement include age, ability and an effort to keep group sizes similar, so that one group is not huge and another tiny (especially the D 1, 2, 3 groups).  Another consideration at this time of the year, i.e., before the season starts, is that we do have a Stroke Clinic (more on this below) that will place 25-ish swimmers onto the team.  If the coaching staff (and I approve any/all group changes) believes a group change at any time is best for the team and swimmer, we will make that change after contacting the swimmer’s parents.  The ‘normal’ times we change swimmers into a new group are after the first two weeks of the season (giving the staff a chance to evaluate our groups), and in the middle of November when the high school season starts.  All changes (I tend to not move a swimmer down) depend on space available starting with the Junior/Senior group.  There will be swimmers moved from the D3 group (I have them earmarked) when the high school season starts.  So, as space becomes available in groups due to changes, we move swimmers into a new group.  {I hope this is not too confusing.}  Keep in mind that most Clinic swimmers joining the team will join in the Cubs, Pride and D1.

Over the past few years once high school season starts in mid-November we have been able to move the D3 group to 4:10-5:40, Monday through Thursday.  This is the goal again this year, and cannot be promised.

Concerning our Stroke Clinic – September 7-10, it is:

                *A recruiting clinic for SCAY

*Available to swimmers (including SCAY) who ARE NOT year round swimmers

                *We cover all four strokes

*Clinic participants will receive a Clinic t-shirt and participation certificate

*All SCAY coaches and JR/SR swimmers will be on deck and involved

Please pass the word about our Stroke Clinic.  If anyone has questions about the Clinic or SCAY, please feel free to give them my phone number/email address, though the phone number is more expedient.

Concerning Assistant Coaches, ads have been placed in the Daily Collegian and on Craig’s List.  If you know anyone, especially ex-SCAY swimmers, who might be interested in coaching this year, please have them contact me soon.

Pre-Season Dryland will begin tomorrow, 9-10 a.m., at the Y, Monday, Wednesday, Friday.  For the most part we will be outside behind the Y.  If it is raining we will meet in Gym B.  Once school starts we will meet on these days from 6:15-7:15 a.m. in Gym B.

Concerning Fall/Winter 2010-11 swimming practice schedule, the Junior/Senior group will start on September 7, from 3:45-5:00 p.m.  There will be JR/SR practice from 9:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 11.  All groups will practice according to the schedule provided below, beginning September 13.  More information on the D groups Saturday practices will come soon.  We will be tweaking these practices this year, which I think will be good for the team.

Shouts from Steve - July 22, 2010 Dryland/Fall info

Good Thursday Afternoon:

This is an interesting time of year.  The complete 2009-10 year is ending and we are already gearing up for the 2010-11 year.  Here are the bullet points:

*Today is our last summer practice, except for the senior group tomorrow morning from 9:00-10:30 at the Y

*Before August 3rd I will send out group lists for fall/winter 2010-11.  Registration will begin on August 23rd.  Your swimmer must be on the list to register, which is done at the Y.  Should you have questions about a swimmer's placement, please contact me.  I will be on vacation from August 3-18 and will not have access to my computer (ahhhhh!), so you can contact me after the 18th.  My home phone is 231-0340.

*There will be dryland practices for those 12 and older beginning August 20th.  I will send more information on this soon.

*For registration for 2010-11, other than payment, there will be two requirements to register:  your email address and the completion of a medical form, which will be available at the front desk.  Email is our main form of communication, so to keep you informed, we need your address.

*The Junior/Senior group will begin practices on Tuesday, September 7, from 3:45-5:00 p.m.  All SCAY groups will practice on September 13.  I will send the schedule with the practice groups.

*Our 10th annual Stroke Clinic will be from September 7-10, 5:00-6:00 at the Y.  This is a recruiting clinic for us, is free, and is available for swimmers who have/are not on a year round team (e.g., SCAY, NLAC).  Registration is limited to 35 swimmers, first come first served.  Clinic registration will also begin on August 23rd.

*We will have a vigorous meet schedule this fall.  My goal is to have four Y meets available prior to the beginning of the high school season.  I will get the schedule to you soon.

I hope you all have a great rest of your summer.  My highlight of August will be taking my mom to Bingo.  "B-13, B-t-h-i-r-t-e-e-n".  She loves it.  I keep hoping someone will poke my eye out with a stick so I can go to the emergency room instead.  If I survive, I will see you all in the fall.

Shouts from Steve - April 29, 2010

April 28, 2010

Good Wednesday Morning:

Y Photos/Check-in

Beginning Monday the Y will be going through the process of updating member photos in our system.  There are many Y members, SCAY swimmers and otherwise, of whom we do not have a photo in our system.  Also, we may have an old photo of one of our swimmers that doesn't look like they look like now.  Beginning Monday, when a swimmer checks-in for practice (or general Y use) the good folks behind the front counter will look at the swimmer's photo in the system to determine if a new photo is needed, at which point they will take a photo.  Hey, they may even need to take a few photos of our SCAY parents!  Here are a few things about members checking in:

*All Y members are asked to bring their Y card to check in - please make sure your children have their Y card with them when they come to practice or to use the Y in any other way.

*All swimmers 11 and older are to have cards.

*Members 10 and younger are to check in, though they will not be issued a card.

The folks behind the desk work hard at what they do, and being as they are our 'front line', they often endure complaints and criticism from our members over which they have no influence.  My hope is that we can make their job easier.  It's nice to be nice.

Should you have any questions, contact me and I will make sure they get answered.

Signed Respectfully,

SP. a/k/a Cy Young

Good Thursday Morning:

Banquet

This year's banquet was alotta fun.  It's funny, sometimes it is difficult recognizing kids when they are not in suits, caps and goggles.  I want to thank everyone for a very fun 2009-10 season.  We had a good deal of success which will, hopefully, propel us into better things in the future.

Nationals

As is the case, Nationals was a good experience.  We took five swimmers who were new to the meet - Rookies!  YMCA Nationals is unlike any meet these swimmers will attend.  It is intense due to the 5000+ people in the pool area and the boys and girls competition going on at the same time, intimate with all the activities going on, and, most of all, fun.  In addition, it is a great situation for the kids to learn a little about themselves.  Kelli Miller is Swimmer of the Meet.

Spring Swimming

Spring swimming has begun and we have a good group of swimmers who are working hard.  Every Friday we have a 'Spring Friday Activity'.  This week's SFA is pizza after practice.  Next Friday we will have our third annual "Steve Strikes Everybody Out" wiffle ball game during practice time - weather permitting.

Spring/Summer Meets

Here are the meets on our schedule for the next 3+ months.  I will take care of Nationals entries.  For all other meets our Meet Entry forms must be used.  All meet information is located on the Mid-Atlantic website:  maswim.org    Go to Meets and find the meet on the calendar.  Meets fill up fast, so I want all meet entries in our Meet entry folder by May 5.  Each meet must be entered separately and must have a meet entry fee check attached, payable to SCAY.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Meet                                                   Date                                        Location

WSY/HSY LC Classic                         June 18-20                               Bucknell

MA Senior Champs                              July 21-24                                Bucknell

YMCA Nationals                                  July 26-30                                U Maryland

In addition, I am trying to arrange for a dual meet during spring.  If we cannot arrange for a dual meet we will have an intersquad meet.

Nationals

I would like email confirmation about intent to participate at Nationals by May 5.  We need to plan ahead, so please let me know.

If you have not signed up yet, (and I have not signed up anyone (I hope) who wasn’t a definite at this point), I still have a few openings:

Saturday afternoon:  Admissions from 1:00-7:00pm; t-shirts/flowers same time period

Sunday morning:  Admissions from 7:00-9:00am

Sunday afternoon:  Security from 12:30-7:30.     2 spots still open!!!

Remember, if you sign up to volunteer for the session, you will be relieved to watch your child swim.  You will also have access to the entire Nat, so that you can watch them from Hospitality or wherever you’d like.    Anyone who is not a volunteer must watch the meet from the stands and pay the entry fee.   Do not plan to stop by and be put to work!   This will happen only if there is a problem with someone who already signed up.

If you are unavailable for the weekend, but could help on Thursday night the 18th, Mechteld Hillsley needs 2-3 volunteers to help organize t-shirts for team pre-orders.   She does this at her house.  If you can help, please contact her at mechteld@engr.psu.edu.    This is actually a lot of fun and goes pretty quickly with extra hands.   Also, she still needs more large bags with handles (eg the type from department stores/Hollister) for this.  If you have any for her, please leave them beside the file cabinet at the Y.

 Food Donations for Hospitality

If you are unable to volunteer, and I know some people are simply not able to, please plan to donate something towards Hospitality.   We all benefit from the money we raise at this meet.   Please read this message from Roxane and Terry:

Dear SCAY families,

I would like to state how important it is for us to have food donations for Hospitality for States.  We have to supply breakfast and lunch for 300 to 400 people or more on Saturday and Sunday.  Terry Cummins and I have been working with businesses over a month now for major donations for these days.  But we still need smaller items donated by our families as Jenny has sent out an e-mail request for these items.

So please consider donating an item especially if you can't help volunteer by working at the meet both days.  As the e-mail stated items can be dropped off at SCAY by 5pm Friday evening or brought to the PSU Nat. on Saturday.morning.

I've only heard but from a few people since the e-mail went out, so that is why I'm writing explaining how important it is we have this food,

I also would like to add that we need 3 cases of regular coke.  Thanks!

Roxane Miller and Terry Cummins Roxanne’s email is decafmom@psu.eduTerry’s email is terrypsu@yahoo.com

Please contact them ASAP!    I am attaching the original list of needs to this email.

I am also attaching the current schedule.  Please look over it and make sure you are where you’d planned to be.  Let me know ASAP if there are any changes needed to be made.   I will need to make all changes by Thursday, as I will not be at home at all on Friday.  (FYI, the Kohl’s volunteers were recruited by Steph Albert.  They are providing 10 people to help AND donating $1,000.00 to the team!)

Volunteer InfoFriday night:  Please arrive at the PSU Visitors Center on time for your shift.  You will be directed to your area and given instructions.

Saturday and Sunday at the Nat:   Please plan to arrive about 5 minutes before your shift starts.  Stop by the Volunteer table (come in the corner doors at the Nat) and check in with Ginny or me and get your name badge.  We will then get you connected with the person in charge of your area for further instructions.   Security personnel will get a t-shirt to wear for their shift.   Parking is in the Bigler Garage and is $5.00 for the day.   If you know your way around PSU, you may know of a better option.    Please contact me with any questions.    I will send out some final comments on Thursday once everything is set.   For those of you who are new to this, I think you will be impressed at this large meet which is being run by SCAY and Bellefonte volunteers!   It is quite an undertaking!

Info for First Time States SwimmersSteve will be getting more information regarding warm up times soon.  Be aware that for this meet, swimmers sit with their teams on deck for the entire meet.  There is no big room to hang out in, so you don’t need chairs, etc…  Pack several towels for your child, a few drinks, and perhaps a snack.  If you forget anything, we have messengers who can give your child a message or run items down to them.   We are very strict about who we allow on deck.  Only registered volunteers, registered coaches, and registered swimmers are allowed on deck.   This is for everyone’s safety.  For more information, check out the States website at www.ymcastates-pa.org.

So, many, many thanks again.  I am looking forward to an exciting weekend.  As usual, please contact me at jkoberna@stompit.net for any questions.   My home phone is 466-6163 and cell is 571-0748.   I will have my cell phone on all weekend at the Nat.

 Have a great week,
Jenny

SCAY News - March 11 Districts/States

SCAY News – March 11, 2010

Hello everyone,

This will be quick.   I think Steve has covered everything that needs to be covered for Districts.   I think there is an admission fee ($5.00?) for non-swimmers to watch the meet.  Also, don’t forget to spring ahead.  It seems early to me….  I do not share Steve's enthusiasm in this regard!

States

I still need help filling some spots with States.   I will try to catch folks at Districts (or you can find me!) regarding getting these filled.   We are coming down to the wire.   I will be calling early next week if there are any openings yet to be filled.   PLEASE step up to the plate with this.  Everyone benefits from the money we make on States, and everyone is expected to chip in.  Email me at jkoberna@stompit.net or call 466-6163.   See the attachment above for needs.  Don't forget that we need older teen volunteers.

If for some reason you are not able to help out with States  (out of town, all of the spots were filled when you called (ha!)) you can also help out with donations for the volunteer concession area.  (prefer cash or gift cards – Giant and Wegmans, esp, since they donated to us)   Roxane Miller and Terry Cumins have done a fantastic job with this for many years.  I can’t begin to imagine the hours they put into planning, getting donations, making food themselves, and organizing the set-up.    I am attaching their request for items.  Please let them know via email (see flyer attached) what you can bring.  Many of the smaller items can be donated by those of us already working.   It is very easy to bring a bag of apples, bunch of bananas, etc…the day of the meet.   And it is an enormous help to them.

Best of luck to all of the SCAY swimmers this weekend!

Jenny

Website

Here is the West Districts website:

                        http://www.hhs.iup.edu/hped/swmeets/2010ymcawestdistricts/

You should definitely check out this site.

Please Note!!Districts will not be held in Memorial Field House.  It will be held in Zink Hall, located next to Memorial.  Also note parking information.

Please Note!!And this is great news! -- We change clocks (springing forward) Saturday into Sunday, so we get to be up and at it an hour earlier.  America, what a country!!

Also, there will be a need for timers and officials.  Please be willing to help.

States

The top 12 individual finishers and the top nine relay finishers will automatically qualify for States the following week that we co-host with Bellefonte at PSU --

Please Note!!All swimmers who are entered in Districts are eligible to participate on relays at both Districts and States.  Should I decide it best for our team performance to replace a District relay swimmer with someone who did not swim on that relay at Districts, I will do so.  I have not done this too often - I just want you to know that this could happen.

Questions??

Should you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to contact me, either via my email or at home:  231-0340.

I am excited about this weekend.  I am sure I have forgotten things here and will get back to you when they pop into my mind.

Tomorrow I will be getting out information about Nationals.

March 9, 2010

Good Tuesday Morning:

This note will concentrate on Nationals, though, before that, I want to mention that we will be taking States qualifiers photos on Monday, March 15, 5:45 p.m., at the Y.  Qualifiers should wear their SCAY suits.  The top 12 individual finishers and the top nine relay team finishers at Districts qualify for States.

Nationals                    *Nationals are April 7 - 10

*We will have a meeting for national qualifiers (listed below)

immediately following States photos on Monday

*Attending the meeting is not a commitment to go to nationals, so,

if you have a swimmer qualified I suggest you attend

*Qualified swimmers and their parents are invited to this meeting

What I am listing below are swimmers/events I have so far.  Should you have any questions, additions or faster times than those listed, please contact me.

Description

1)  March 7, 2010 (8:00 p.m.)
Subject:
Where is Zink Hall?

For those who do not know, Zink Hall is the brown building right next to the Memorial Field House.  Novice Champs were held in Zink from 2004-2009.  Many/most of you should know the building because you might have been/were here for the Novice meet.

2) March 7, 2010 (8:00 p.m.)
Subject:
Meet Check-in Location

Meet Check-In for all swimmers and coaches is in Zink Hall Gym A.  While you are at check in, please feel free to walk around the building.  The check-in location will be very close to the exit to the MFH pool for warm-ups/cool downs (see #4 below), so note how to get to the MFH pool.

3) March 7, 2010 (8:00 p.m.)
Subject:
Gym Space Availability

We will have both gyms available (so there is actually significantly more gym space available than in the Memorial Field House).  Swimmers/family areas will be in Gym B.  Located in Gym A will be concessions, check-in, the states table, Kast-A-Way and overflow space for swimmers/family.  Gym A will be a bit cooler, because people will be exiting the back door to go to the Memorial Field House (see posting #4).  We will not permit the opening and closing of doors in Gym B, so it should be warm enough for swimmers in there.

4) March 7, 2010 (8:00 p.m.)
Subject:
Is the Memorial Field House Pool Available for Warm-ups and Warm-Downs?
YES it IS available!

The Memorial Field House will be open for warm-ups and cool-downs throughout the meet.   When you go to check-in for the meet (in Gym A) , note the door at the back of the gym.  To go to the Field House the shortest way possible, exit that door (the back door out of the Zink Hall Gym A) , proceed ahead 50 feet and enter the door to the Field House pool  by the diving well (it is the door which is right behind the Winners corner where awards are presented on the awards stand at districts.  Make sure swimmers bring parkas and athletic footwear for the 15-30 second walk outside to the MFH pool.  This walkway will be roped off and the parking lot will be closed so safety is not an issue.

5) March 7, 2010 (8:45 p.m.)
Subject:
Meeting Areas-Coaches and Officials

Coaches Meetings will be upstairs in 203 Zink.  Officials Meetings will be held in 202 Zink.  Coaches eating area will be first floor of Zink, 106/107 or 108 (still not sure which room, but look on that first floor hallway of classrooms and look for the food).   Coaches:  a most positive note; we will be in a carpeted classroom, not the deep, dark dungeon of the field house filter room! :-)

6) March 7, 2010 (9:30 p.m.)
Subject:
"Spring Forward"

I know this is a little bit off the subject, but while I've got you here, remember that on Saturday night the 13th, we get one less hour of sleep.  Clocks move forward at 2:00 a.m.  Remember to "spring forward" and move your clock forward on Saturday night.  Don't miss your warm-up!!

7)  March 8:   (10:00 a.m.)
Subject:
Officials Still

This is also a bit off the subject, but officials are needed for Saturday a.m. (Juniors), Sunday a.m. (Cadets) and Sunday p.m. (Preps).  If you can help out,...
PLEASE EMAIL Jim McElhaney NOW:
     Obelvedere@zoominternet.net

8) March 8:  (10:00 a.m.)
Subject:
Awards

Awards will still be given on the pool deck on the awards stand as in past years in the "Winners' Corner."  (Actually, parents will be able to get better pictures because the Winners' Corner in Zink will be much closer to the balcony).  The "IUP Victory Rule" regarding music selcetion will be in effect.  For those of you who do not know this, if you win at districts, you can provide the music to the scorer's table to march to if you want.  You must provide it on CD, and the music must be clean, appropriate, and in good taste.  But winners, remember, if you win, you can provide the music to march to,  if you want!!

9) March 8:  (10:00 a.m.)
Subject:
Pump McLaughlin Award Presentation

The presentation of the Pump McLaughlin Memorial Award will go on as scheduled prior to the senior session.  Plan on it as usual!

10)  March 8:  (10:00 a.m.)
Subject:
Parking Your Car

There will be more details on this as they develop, but we ask this....plan to park in the R + P lot.  The R + P lot is located behind the tennis courts which are to the west of Zink Hall (the field House is to the east, the tennis courts are to the west)  and is the size of a football field.  Plan to drive behind Zink Hall, drop off everyone but the driver at the back of the building, and then drive over to the R + P lot.  You may have to walk about 200 yards, but please help out.

Do NOT plan to park around the Memorial Field House.  Do not plan to park behind the Eberly College of Business (which is to the east of the Field House).

Plan to park in the R+P lot.  Look for the tennis courts and park behind them.  You can't miss that big parking lot.  Look for an update on parking later in the week.

SCAY News - March 2 States/Districts/Banquet

SCAY News – March 2, 2010

Hello everyone,

Several people have asked me if their children can still swim with the team, even though they didn’t make District times.   The answer is YES.  You are very welcome to keep swimming until the end of this season!  (the end of March)  More to follow from Steve…

SCAY Banquet/Date Saver:     Our annual SCAY Banquet is scheduled for Friday, April 16th at the Park Forest Baptist Church.    It is a lot of fun for swimmers and families.  Swimmers will receive trophies and envelopes with their best times of the season.   We will congradulate and hear from our graduating seniors.  And there will be lots of food!     Need for Shopping Bags for StatesFrom Mechteld Hillsley, T-shirt chair at States:   For t-shirt distribution at States we are in need of sturdy shopping bags of all sizes (small – xlarge to fit anywhere from 1-20 shirts).  Please set any donated bags by the file cabinet at the Y.  Donations can be made at anytime from now until March 16.  Thank you!  Mechteld Hillsley States Volunteer Needs

If this is the first year your child has qualified for Districts, please don’t hesitate to contact me or another board member or parent rep if you have questions that weren’t answered in last week’s SCAY News.

Shouts from Steve - March 2, 2010

March 2, 2010

Good Tuesday Morning:

My wife, Kelli Hoover, had back surgery this past Thursday, which is why I have been away from practices.  Yesterday should be the last day I will miss, unless something unforeseen comes up.  Everything is fine and the doctor feels very positive about the success of the operation.

Districts                                  Districts are March 13 – 14.  Here is the general schedule:

            Saturday           A.M.    13-14 session

                                    P.M.    15-18 session

            Sunday A.M.    10/U session

                                    P.M.    11-12 session

Attached are our District entries.  No individual event changes will be allowed.  We can change relay personnel, though we can only use SCAY swimmers already entered in the meet.

When I receive our warm up times/lanes I will get them to you.

Saturday Practice                   This Saturday, March 6, we will have a practice for District qualifiers only.  This practice will be from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.  Parents:  it would be nice to send in breakfast treats for the kids after practice.

Communication                      What has been happening with these notes going out is I send them to our IT person who sends them out over our server.  (This all language and approach I do not understand.)  Our IT is on her honeymoon, so I will send this out via the distribution lists I have; Jenny Koberna will also send them out and will put them on the website.  Pass the word if you get messages this week.  The IT will be back next week.

More as it happens.  I am looking forward to seeing the kids tonight…..

 SP

Practices will be held today, Friday February 26

Practices will be held today, Friday, February 26.   D3 will practice with Jr/Sr from 3:40-5:00.   All others practice from 5:00-6:15.   As always, use your best judgement regarding whether it is safe for you to travel.

Jenny

SCAY Practices ON today, February 25, 2010

Hi everyone,
There WILL be practice today at SCAY.   Certainly use your best judgement if the weather starts to deteriorate.  Right now, it looks like it will be ok until later in the evening.
Jenny

Shouts from Steve - February 24, 2010

February 24, 2010

Good Wednesday Morning:

A couple things I forgot to mention in yesterday's note.....

Today's Practice

I will not be at practice tonight.  Nicole will be taking my practices today and tomorrow and Brendan (see next item) will run practice Friday.

Friday Practices (2/26)

The only change for Friday is that the D3 group will practice from 3:40 - 5:00.  If swimmers in this group cannot attend during this time, they can come during their regular Friday time (5:00 - 6:15).  We will be running a special circuit practice for the JR/SR and D3 kids this day.

Last Chance Meet

There has been some concern expressed about having enough parent volunteers running this meet.  Right now we have over 50 kids entered in the meet.  We will pick up some more over the next few days.  This meet has been on our schedule all season.  With 50+ kids, and visiting teams providing some help, we will run this meet as we normally do.  Please be willing to time, officiate, work the desk, whatever it takes to make sure SCAY puts on a good meet.  Even if you don't have swimmers in the meet, you can still come and help.  I look forward to a fun meet Saturday.  See you then.

More next week....

Attached you will find the sign up sheet for SCAYs responsibilities for States, which will be held at the PSU Natatorium on March 20 and 21, 2010.  We have over 120 shifts to fill at States, so it is quite an undertaking!   We split this evenly with Bellefonte, since we divide the profit with them.  They are a smaller team, so their families asked to volunteer 2-3 shifts per family.  We are asking 1-2 per family, preferably 2.  All families are asked to volunteer, regardless of whether they have a swimmer entered in the meet, because we all benefit from the money raised.  This is our biggest fundraiser of the year!

Sign ups are NOT on line this year.  Please email me at jkoberna@stompit.net with what you would like to do.   You can also call me at 466-6163 (before 8:30pm) to sign up.    I will confirm right away.

You will notice that there are several teen jobs, including Awards (runner, missing swimmer chase down) and messengers.  (requires a cell phone)   This is a wonderful opportunity for teens to get their high school volunteer hours.  Let me know ASAP if you would like to help.   The sooner you sign up, the more likely you are to get the position you would like.    You will not be allowed on deck or free entry to the meet unless you have signed up to volunteer for a position!

Feel free to call me if you have any questions about the positions or the meet itself.  It really is exciting to be a part of this and to watch some of the best swimmers in the state (including our own!) compete.   Please take a moment and sign up ASAP.   I will begin calling people after March 8.  (I am busy, too, and would appreciate not having to resort to this!)                                                Have a good week, Jenny

SCAY News - February 16 Champs/Meet Info

SCAY News – February 16, 2010

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the meet this past weekend.   I understand that it went very well!

KSYL Championships this Saturday, February 20.

This is a large meet, so be prepared to spend some time in a gymnasium with your swimmers.   Most people bring chairs, snacks (they will sell some there, too), extra towels, and games for the younger swimmers.   In the past, some teams have required the swimmers to wear some type of shoes to the seeding area, so you may want to play it safe and bring those, too.

We will need to provide about 7-8 volunteers per session, which includes timers and officials.    We can contact the coordinator when we get there and see where help is needed.    Volunteers will have the best view of the meet!

For more information, check the Hollidaysburg Swim Team Website http://www.tigersharksswimteam.org/Champs%20Info.html

Directions to the Hollidaysburg YMCA:

Hollidaysburg meet - at Hollidaysburg YMCA

*99 South
*take the Plank Road Exit (Logan Valley Mall exit)
*go right at the end of the ramp
*take a right at the first light you come to (look for EatNPark)
*take a right at the 2nd light (1/2 mile) - route South 36 (you'll go
under 99)
*approximately 3 miles the Y will be on your right
West Districts, March 13 and 14

District T-shirt orders are due in the Koberna folder by Saturday, February 20.   I sent forms and a picture of the shirt with the last SCAY News.   We will hand them out at the meet.

For further information about the Meet, visit http://www.hhs.iup.edu/hped/swmeets/2010ymcawestdistricts

Officials are needed for Districts!   Please go to the website above, go under Officials, complete the form, and return it as directed.   Please do this ASAP.   As I recall, they provide lunch!

If you would like to place a Happy Ad for your swimmer, also go to the above website under advertisements and complete the form there.   Happy Ads are due print ready and with payment, by February 27.

If you have not booked your hotel yet, we still have some openings at the Blairsville Hampton Inn.  1-724-459-5920. The SCAY rate is $99.00 per night and includes 2 queen beds.   Book under the “State College Area YMCA.”

YMCA State Championships, March 20 and 21

Speaking of great websites, check out our new States website at http://www.ymcastates-pa.org.   Meet Director, Steph Albert did a wonderful job with this.   Also, check out the linked ads, and when you patronize these businesses, mention that you saw them on the States website!  Special thanks to Karen Myford for making this happen.

I will soon be recruiting volunteers for States.   As you know by now, we all chip in for this, even if we don’t have a family member swimming.   I will not have volunteer sign ups on line this year.   If you have something special that you would like to do, please email me directly and ASAP at jkoberna@stompit.net.   I will be sending out times and job descriptions soon.  Ginny Newman (from Bellefonte) and I have been fine tuning the schedule based on feedback from last year and consultation with current chairpersons.   So, more to follow soon!  (I have started signing up people who have volunteered in the past and know the jobs they want.)

I think that’s all for this week.   You will hear more about warm up times from Steve later in the week.   As always, please contact me with any questions, suggestions, or concerns.

This is an exciting time of the year!

Best of luck to all of the swimmers,

Jenny

Good Monday Morning:
My wife gave me a Valentine's Day card that has what looks like an old Polaroid photo of a young girl standing on a porch with her arms folded and a sour look on her face.  The front of the card says, "I know sometimes I'm difficult and stubborn but since it's Valentine's Day I want you to know one thing...and on the inside of the card it says, "I'M WORTH IT!"  I got her a live plant.  How'd I do?  If you ever want to know my five rules for a long lasting relationship, ask.....
SCAY/Holidaysburg Dual Meet
Grace Dangelo broke the 8/U girls 25 free team record that was set in 1976, one of the oldest records on the books.  The record was 15.30 and Grace went 15.29.  Super job Grace!  Swimmers of the Meet are Kirsten Hillsley and Matt Fritsch.  Both swam well and swam up to help the high school kids get the first relay done so they could get their meet in before running to the bus to go over to Wyoming Valley West near Wilkes Barre.  Thank you Kirsten and Matt.
KYSL Champs

I want to make this clear:  KYSL Champs this Saturday are at the Holidaysburg Y.  Dubois was originally scheduled to host the meet and, due to scheduling problems, couldn't, so Holidaysburg picked it up.  I appreciate their willing to do this.  Please read the following:
  • I am attaching our entries.  If your swimmer(s) will not be participating please let me know.  I must make any changes by tomorrow night.  I am not inclined to change events, though will change entry times - ESPECIALLY any high school times I submitted.  Please let me know ASAP.
  • 8/U and 10/U swimmers will swim the morning session with warm ups beginning not before 7:00 a.m.  11-12, 13-14, 15-18 swimmers will swim in the afternoon session with warm ups beginning not before noon.  When I receive specific warm up times/lanes later in the week I will send this information to you.
All Team Practice
We will again have an all team practice this Friday from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.  Parents, you did a great job sending in treats for the kids.  This week I will provide the treats.
Districts
The meet is March 13-14 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  The coaching staff will meet Sunday morning (February 21) to set up our District entries.  These could change due to our Last Chance meet on February 27.  We will be sending in our final entries after Last Chance.  Swimmers can enter a total of three events, one of which must be a relay.  If swimmers with more than three qualifying times have preferences, please get these to me.  As has happened in the past, swimmers not qualified in individual events have been placed on District relays.  If your swimmer who does not have individual qualifying times for Districts and will not be available for relays please let me know.
Note
KYSL and Districts are different from our dual meets.  Once we send in entries we can not add swimmers and, in most cases, change swimmers and entry times.  Please be sure to let me know.
Volunteers
For our KYSL Champs we will need approximately 7-8 volunteers for each session.  Please make yourself available to work the meet - timing, officiating, etc.  You guys did a great job this past Saturday, and I thank you.

Good Snowy Wednesday Morning:

I am canceling all practices today.  Enjoy the day.  Jenny Koberna told me yesterday that skiing was canceled today due to the snow.  What's next?  Canceling swim practices because there is water in the pool?

By the way, I apologize for not discussing this sooner.....we canceled the meet with Holidaysburg on January 30 due to a pump going out on the filter pump.  The computer was overridden to feed chemicals into the pool.  As is the usual case when hand feeding chemicals into the pool, it takes a couple days to get things leveled out.  I know the chlorine levels were a little high on Monday and Tuesday, though we did not feel they were dangerous.  I do know there were some dry skin/rashes and ruined suits.  Things are leveled out now.  Thanks for your patience.  The Aquatics staff work hard to keep the pool in good condition, and I thanked them for their efforts in this situation.  If you want to know some good stories about pool situations I have encountered, simply ask.

Another 'by the way' - at our Monday Board meeting (and our board members deserve a solid pat on the back) volunteerism was discussed.  I have mentioned more than once that nothing good happens for our swimmers if we don't have parents stepping up and helping at our meets.  This includes this weekend when the meet starts at 8:00 - and your kids need to be there by 6:45.  It will also include our Last Chance District Qualifier on February 27.  Most importantly, it means being willing to be there at States on March 20-21.  We definitely need to make sure that we are able to conduct a great meet at States.  Karen Myford and Maryellen Hurley coordinate volunteers.  When they call, please be willing to help out.

See you soon.....

SCAY News - February 9 Hoagie/Soup Thursday/Meet Info/T-shirt

SCAY News – February 9, 2010

Hi everyone.  I have lots of news today, so please read through everything carefully.

Mariana’s Hoagie/Soup Sales – Pick up changed to Thursday because of Snow!

Karen Myford and Heather Jordan have arranged for the hoagies and soup to be delivered on Thursday rather than Wednesday because of snow storm expected tomorrow.   The soup and hoagies will now be available Thursday, February 11 between 4:00 and 6:00pm.   Thanks again to Heather and Karen for arranging this.

Meet this Saturday, February 13 with Hollidaysburg at Home

I want to make sure everyone knows that the meet this weekend is at SCAY, not at Hollidaysburg as originally scheduled.    The meet will start at 8:00am rather than 9:00.   Both of these changes have been made to accommodate our high school swimmers who need to get in another meet in order to qualify for Districts (due to our 2 cancelled meets).   They have to leave for a high school meet after the medley relays, as I understand.   You will need to have your swimmers there by 6:45 to prepare for warm-ups at 7:00.

I am keeping the same group assignments from the Hollidaysburg meet that was cancelled on the 30th:

Here are the group responsibilities:

Concession Donations and Staffing:  D2   (Parent rep Terry Cumins at terrypsu@yahoo.com)

Set-Up:  Cubs/Pride    (Parent Rep Jen Dangelo at jen_dangelo@comcast.net)

Tear Down:  D1    (Parent Reps Leslie and Chris Finton  fintons@comcast.net)

If you have not been contacted yet, please contact your parent reps and see how you can help.

Many thanks to Joan Schrock, Karen Myford, Ellen Holleran, Kristen Caswell, and Cindy Linzell for stepping up to help chair states positions.

As most of you know, we share responsibilities for running the State YMCA Championships with the Bellefonte YMCA   This is a huge undertaking.   It is also our major fundraiser of the year.  (helps us afford new equipment, computers, timing system updates, trophy case, meet entry fees, etc )   Since this benefits everyone, every family on the team is expected to help for at least 1-2 sessions during the meet, even if your child isn’t swimming.  (many of us are there all weekend)   Please save the dates:  March 20-21, 2010!    Please consider how you would like to help.  I will start recruiting soon!

 Recap of Upcoming Important Dates:

Thursday, February 11:  Pick up hoagies/soup between 4 and 6pm
Saturday, Feb 13:  Let Steve know if your child is NOT participating in Champs.   (Champs meet is in Hollidaysburg on Saturday, February 20.  10 and unders swim in the morning.  Meet starts at 9:00.   Warm-ups prior to meet.    Eleven and older session starts after the morning session ends.)

Saturday, February 20:  District T-shirt orders due in the Koberna folder by 5:00pm. (order form attached)

Sunday, February 21:  District entries due to Steve by 8:00am

Saturday, February 27:  Last Chance meet (last chance to make District Times)

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.   Enjoy the snow!

Good Friday Afternoon:

My best friend lives in Fairbanks, Alaska.  He laughs at our 'snow days'.  Up there they cancel bus service when the temp gets to 20 below - which means parents have to get their kids to school.

Brookville has asked that we let them know tonight whether or not we are coming tomorrow.

I will let you know around 6:00 tonight if I am canceling the meet.  So you understand, I have always erred on the side of caution with traveling to our meets in inclement weather.

Though school is closing an hour early, right now I am planning on holding practices tonight - and the Junior group will wish I had cancelled practices.  If this changes we will send out a note at 2:00.

So you know, Jen Stephens, our IT person at the Y, sends these messages out over our server as I was having email problems from my computer.  I thank Jen immensely for this and all the work she does for SCAY.

Good Early (3:37) Thursday Morning:

Mr. Short Shower, here.....

I hope you are up and seeing a beautiful starry sky and the moon.  This is the best time of the day.

Brookville

Entries are attached.  Due to the weather possibilities and the potential "degree of road crapiness" (I will not divulge who sent that to me), I will send a note out at 5:00 a.m. Saturday.  The note will only be sent to you if the weather is such that we shouldn't go.  I have alerted Brookville on this.

A correction (and I will not divulge the name of the parent who alerted me to this) since our warm ups start at 8:30, swimmers should arrive by 8:15 (not 7:45) to check in with their coaches.  All coaches will be at the meet.

Nationals

I need to know ASAP if swimmers who qualify for Nationals will be going.  Please let me know by Monday, February 8.  See attached qualifying times.

All Team Practice

There will be an all team practice on Friday, February 12, from 4:00 - 5:00.  Parents are invited to send in treats (you know, things such as carrots, celery etc) for after practice in the lobby.  Thanks in advance.

I'm gonna go out now and bark at the moon.....

SCAY News - States Ad Information!

Dear SCAY Families and Friends,

The State College Area YMCA Swim Team will once again be co-hosting the prestigious YMCA State Championships Meet at the McCoy Natatorium on Saturday and Sunday, March 20 & 21.  This two-day event will bring more than 5000 swimmers, friends, families and team personnel to Centre County to dine, shop and sleep.  The people visiting State College for "States" provide significant financial opportunities for our local businesses.

If you own a business or have family who does, we hope you will consider the purchase of program advertising.  This year, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new website that will enable out of town participants the opportunity to research hotels, restaurants and merchants before traveling here.  All program advertisers will receive a link on our website at no additional cost this year.  The website is particularly important since many swimmers don't know until two weeks before the State Meet if they qualify to participate in this State competition.  Access to quick, accurate information is essential.  Each advertising option below will include a link to your website located on the State College Area page of the site:  http://www.ymcastates-pa.org/.

Hosting Pennsylvania's YMCA Championship is a huge undertaking.  Over 500 community volunteers donate their time to this meet to recognize the efforts of Pennsylvania's best YMCA age-group swimmers.  Because our swim team is financially self-supporting we rely on the proceeds from this event to defray our operating costs.  These costs include, but are not limited to, pool rentals, coaches' salaries, and team administration.  With your help we can continue to provide a program that promotes a healthy mind, body, and spirit for all.

Please support our SCAY team and promote your business by choosing from the advertising options below.  Program ads are included in a professionally designed 8.5 x 11 size book.  We can create an ad with information you provide us or we can use your camera-ready ad.

Ad Sizes and pricing are as follows:

Full Page (7 ¼ x 10 inches or 43 x 60 picas) plus website text listing and link:                    $200.00

Half Page (7 ¼ x 4 ¾ inches or 43 x 29 picas) plus website text listing and link:                 $125.00

Quarter Page (3 ½ x 4 ¾ or 21 x 29 picas) plus website text listing and link:                      $ 75.00

Business Card (3 ½ x 2 inches or 21 x 12 picas) plus website text listing and link:              $ 50.00

Event Sponsor (4 Lines, 36 characters/line):                                                                    $ 25.00

Please respond with your preferred ad size along with your camera ready artwork to myford4@comcast.net and we will get to work in placing your business on the website and in the program.  Payment and a copy of the ad should be sent to:

Kristin Caswell

                                    2008 Park Forest Ave

                                    State College, PA  16803

If your organization is not interested in placing an ad, but would like to make a donation, SCAY would be delighted to have your support. We will include your company's name in our program's "Thank You!" page.  Please send your check to the above address.

On behalf of all YMCA swimmers in Pennsylvania, thank you for your consideration!

SCAY News - January 26 Meet Info/States

SCAY News, January 26, 2010

Hello again!   Thanks to all of the parents who volunteered last week at Ridgeway.    We covered all of our positions well.  Thanks again to Mary Ellen Hurley for coordinating all of this!

 Hollidaysburg Meet

The Hollidaysburg Meet is this Saturday at SCAY.   Here are the group responsibilities:

Concession donations and help:   D2   (Parent rep Terry Cumins at terrypsu@yahoo.com)

Set-Up:  Cubs/Pride    (Parent Rep Jen Dangelo at jen_dangelo@comcast.net)

Tear Down:  D1    (Parent Reps Leslie and Chris Finton  fintons@comcast.net)

If you were missed, please contact them and see how you can help.

Roxane Miller and Terry Cumins also asked me to remind those who have not made their drink donations to please donate this weekend.   We have plenty of juice boxes now.  We are really in need of water and Gatorade.   Thanks!

Karen Myford and MaryEllen Hurley, our volunteer coordinators, found that the check-in table at the last home meet made swimmer check-in and volunteer sign-ups run very smoothly.   They will continue to do this at this weekend’s meet and at the Last Chance meet.  (our last home meet!)  If at all possible, they would still prefer that you sign in ahead of time on-line.

 Soup/Hoagie Sales

Please remember to order your soup and hoagies this week.  Forms were sent via email last week and hard copies are available on the file cabinet in the SCAY lobby.  Deadline for ordering is Monday, February 1, before 5:00pm.

 Champs/Districts T-shirts

I will soon be sending attachments with information about t-shirt orders for Champs and Districts this year.  I will also leave forms at the YMCA.  Please place completed forms with checks attached in the T-shirt file folder in the cabinet at the YMCA.

 States Needs

The Fundraising and Flowers chairs have still not been filled.   I have spoken with a few people about these positions, but so far no one has committed.   We desperately need these spots covered.  The fundraising chair has the bonus that you will not need to volunteer the weekend of States, and you can do it from home.  (see explanations of positions in last week’s SCAY News)    If you are interested in volunteering for these positions please call me, anytime day or night, at home 466-6163 or via cell 571-0748.  I will get back with you ASAP and help in any way I can.   I understand that we are all very busy.  This is a pretty short term commitment and I think each job is manageable.  Plus, last year’s chairs for both positions have offered to help/offer guidance.   And they have all of the information organized for you!!

Thanks again for all your help and support.   Best of luck to all of the swimmers this weekend!

Jenny

Good Monday Morning:

SCAY vs Ridgeway                I really enjoy going to Ridgeway.  The parents run a good meet and the pool is my favorite in the league (one of the few I get to swim in before the meet).  I want to thank the parents who volunteered to work - you represented very well.  Swimmers of the Meet are Grace Dangelo and Teddy Smith - great job you two!

SCAY vs Hollidaysburg         We host Hollidaysburg this Saturday.  Our warm ups will be at 8:00, so we would like the swimmers to arrive at 7:45.  For this weekend we will not have a Meet Event.  Rather, we will concentrate on our best events and/or those events in which swimmers are closest to District times.  We coaches will begin taking sign ups tonight.  Parents can also email me yes or no - especially those parents of younger swimmers.  I would like all sign ups by Wednesday so I can get the meet set up.

Concerning High School swimmers:  Being as this is Hollidaysburg you are invited to swim a couple of individual events in addition to the medley relay.  Please let me know your preferences.  PARENTS please get this to your High School swimmers.

Parking                                   At the Y I am a member of the Management Team.  At our last Management Team meeting swim team parents parking in the circle in front of the Y came up.  This is not an area where people are supposed to park.  Please find a parking space and come into the Y to get your swimmers.  Thanks.

More as it happens...

SCAY News - January 19 States/Meet Info/Hoagie&Soup Sales

SCAY News – January 19, 2010

Hi everyone.  I have lots of news today, so please read through everything carefully.

 States Needs !

We still are in desperate need of 2 chairs for the states committee.    They are:

Fundraising:   Joan Schrock was in charge of this last year and has all of the information you need.  She has the names and addresses of businesses who have donated in the past, contact persons, and a form letter.   The job involves sending a letter to the businesses (and any others you would like to add), then following up with a phone call in about 2 weeks if you haven’t heard back from them.  We are offering adds in the program and on the States website this year.  Joan has all the info and is happy to get you started!   It is a great way to contribute “on your own time!”

Flowers:   Heidi Wright held this position last year and has all of the information organized.  She also offered to help if needed!   This involves obtaining flowers from donors (she has the list) and then picking them up and getting them to the Nat.   She has a list of supplies needed and has a lot left over from last year.  (paper and ribbon to wrap the flowers in)   You are not committed to be at the Nat all weekend.  Saturday morning is probably the most important.   Others will be assigned to help you during the shifts.  This is a fun job – surrounded by flowers and happy people!

If you have any questions about these positions, please don’t hesitate to call me at 466-6163 or via email.

We really need these spots filled ASAP!

As most of you know, we share responsibilities for running the State YMCA Championships with the Bellefonte YMCA   This is a huge undertaking.   It is also our major fundraiser of the year.  (helps us afford new equipment, computers, timing system updates, trophy case, meet entry fees, etc – and pizza!)   Since this benefits everyone, every family on the team is expected to help for at least 1-2 sessions during the meet, even if your child isn’t swimming.  (many of us are there all weekend)   Please save the dates:  March 20-21, 2010!

 Late Night

We had a very good turn out for Late Night at the Y - 86 swimmers signed in.  (There may have been a few more that missed the sign in)   Thanks to everyone that donated food and drinks and volunteered to help.   We went through 20 extra large pizzas, as well as other goodies.   Special thanks to Kristen Caswell for her amazing homemade muffins!  As always, the highlight of the evening was the pool coin toss…

 Meet Notes

A big thank you to everyone who chipped in to run the Philipsburg Meet this past Saturday.   They are a small team, and are just getting started.  I think we ended up supplying all of the timers as well as the other “home” positions.   Thank you!

This Saturday’s Meet is with Ridgeway at Ridgeway.   More information will be following later this week from Steve.    Directions are as follows:

Ridgeway meet - the meet is in St. Marys in a school pool

*80 West
*Take Exit 111 (old exit #18), Route 153 North
*Go into Penfield, take a right at the light onto 255 North
*Go into St. Marys, at the second light you will see a Wendy's and Tractor Supply Co. on the right.  Continue past this light to the next light which is the St. Marys Area High School.  Turn right into the school at that light.
Appx. drive time per Mapquest is 1 hour 36 minutes.  Mariana Hoagie Sales/Soup Sales Attached to this note will be order forms and information for our annual Marianna Hoagies and Harrison’s Soup Sale.   There are also extra forms in the filing cabinet at the YMCA.   The orders are due Monday, February 1 by 5:00pm.   Pick up will be Wednesday, February 10 between 4:30 and 6:30pm.   Heather Jordan and Karen Myford are arranging this again this year.   The proceeds from this sale go towards our annual spring banquet.   It is wonderful to pick up dinner as you pick up your child from swimming!

Lost and Found:

Shawn Quinn has 3 female suits – 1 SCAY and 2 Park Forest frog suits.  One is a size 30.  She also has a SCAY cap.  If you are missing these, please call her at 880-8620.   Also, the Cullins never found their cap and goggles.  If you know of their whereabouts, please let them know.  Remember to check the general lost and found to the left of the kitchen at the YMCA when you find something missing.   Things generally get placed there (except for goggles)    A few towels, some socks, and a pair of goggles were left at Late Night.   I think the Y donates these items to charity if they are not picked up within the week.

As usual, don’t hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or ideas.

Happy Swimming!

Good Monday Morning:

Swimmers of the Meet for Saturday's dual meet with TY-Valley are Hannah Mancuso and Ben Schiffer.  Great job, Hannah and Ben.  I also want to thank all the parents who helped run the meet - and our Late Night - as all your efforts certainly are appreciated.

We will begin taking sign ups today for our away dual meet with Ridgeway.  I will let you know when our warm up time and the meet start time are when I get them.  Remember, parents, you can email me yes or no about meet entries.  This is especially useful for the younger swimmers as, for the most time, they don't know if they are going to be in the meet.  Thanks.

A short today, I know.  More as it happens.....

January 13, 2010

Good Wednesday Morning:

The meet event this Saturday is butterfly, so everyone who is legal will be swimming the butterfly event in their age group.

Concerning Late Night this Saturday.  The main activities will be rock climbing and the world renown SCAY Coin Dive.  The pool will be open from 9:30 - 10:30, and the coin dive will take place at 10:15.  Oh, did I mention the annual swimmers vs old people basketball game, which will begin sometime between 8:15 and 8:30.  Though this morning all those boys who have been telling me the Old Guys were going down, were telling me something about an away meet and they may not get back in time.  Same excuse I would use if I were them, under these circumstances.  If you are interested in hearing some of the highlights of the history of these games, simply ask.

Also concerning Late Night

, all swimmers should be picked up by 11:00 - and remember, all parents/swimmers are to sign in and out.

You recently got a note about volunteering from SCAY Board President Jenny Koberna.  I have discussed many times how important parents are to what we do for our kids.  Going beyond getting them to practices and meets, our meets cannot run without our parents - yes and those from the visiting teams.  My hope is that all of SCAY's parents would be willing to volunteer to time, seed, hand out cards, work concession, officiate (if you are qualified - and getting qualified is easy, just ask), and any of the other jobs available.  Karen and MaryEllen (as do many of our parents) work hard at making sure our meets run smoothly.

I support their efforts in getting parents to volunteer, and ask we all do the same.

On Monday, January 18 (Martin Luther King, Jr*., Day) there will not be an organized dryland practice - Swimmers can come in on their own and workout.

SCAY afternoon swim practices will be during their normal times.

*One of my favorite quotes is from Marin Luther King, which contained 'judging a man by the content of his character, rather than by the color of his skin'.

More as it happens.....

SCAY News - January 12 Meet info/Late Night at the Y

SCAY News – January 12, 2010Meet with Philipsburg this Saturday, January 16

We have another home meet this weekend.   Group responsibilities are as follows:

Concessions:  Cubs/Pride   (Jen Dangelo)

Set Up:  D1   (Leslie and Chris Finton)

Tear Down:  Junior/Senior   (Karen Myford)

You should receive information regarding this from your group reps in the near future.  Thank you for helping.  It really takes a coordinated effort to pull off a good meet!

 Volunteering for meets

First, a big thanks to all of you regular volunteers.  You really make the meets happen!  Also, thanks to all of you who sign up ahead of time on our website, www.aqualions.org.

Our volunteer coordinators, Karen Myford and MaryEllen Hurley would like to try something different this weekend which will hopefully help ensure that needed positions are filled and help get the meet underway on time.  They will have a “SCAY Check-in” table set up when you first walk in the YMCA on Saturday morning.   They will check off the name of swimmers and ask parents where you would like to help if you have not already signed up on line.  If you have any questions about a position you are interested in, they would be happy to provide information or get you connected with someone that can help you.

Many teams make a requirement that in order for a swimmer to be on the team, the parents must agree to help with a certain number of meets.   We have not made this an official requirement, but it is expected and it is the right thing to do.  If you have not volunteered at any meets yet, please plan to help for the remaining home meets.  We will help you find a position you are comfortable with.   If we all chip in, it benefits all of our children.  And, it’s fun and we get a front row seat!

 States

We still need volunteer chairpersons for the following positions at States, which will be held on March 20-21at the PSU Natatorium:

Volunteer Coordinator(s)

Fundraising

Flowers

Please contact Steph Albert at sja150@yahoo.com if you can help or if you would like to find out more about these positions.  It really is fun to be a part of the leadership group on this undertaking.

Also, please remember that this is our big fundraiser of the year.   All families are expected to volunteer at least 1-2 shifts during the weekend, even if your child is not swimming.  More to follow soon.   Please save the date!

Late Night at the Y this Saturday

Don’t forget our Late Night at the Y this Saturday from 8-11pm.   There will be basketball, open gym, open rec room, rock climbing, swimming, pizza, and goodies.   It is always a fun evening!

See you Saturday, Jenny

Good Thursday Morning:

The next time you come into the Y take a gander at our new trophy case and bulletin board.  Thanks to our board and Karen Myford and Heather Jordan, our area looks great.  My hope is that we will win a few more awards to display.

Remember, tomorrow morning we have our dual meet with Juniata Valley.  Swimmers should arrive at 7:45, check in with their coaches then get ready to start warm ups at 8:00.  A couple things about our home meets:

v     The swimmers lead the singing of our National Anthem.  Please follow suit and sing loud and, as James Brown intoned, "Proud".

v     Entries by name will be posted in the lobby - this will include relays.

v     If you can, keep your swimmers to the end of the meet.  As happens a few times during the season, we need swimmers to fill the freestyle relays.  Otherwise we have to scratch that relay.

v     Please have your swimmers sit on the side of the pool where the team and coaches are.  This will help us round up the stray who is late to the seeding area.

v     Food is not to be eaten on deck.  Swimmers and spectators are to eat all food in the lobby/concession areas.

Beginning Monday, January 11, all dryland practices will start at 6:15 a.m.

More as it comes up.....

SCAY News - January 5 Meet info/Late Night/Misc

SCAY News – January 5, 2010 Happy New Year!

I have lots of information to share as the regular season gets underway in earnest:

Meet this Saturday with Juniata Valley at SCAY:

Meet details as noted in Steve’s note.   As always, we will need lots of volunteers to help.  Please sign up ASAP at www.aqualions.org to help during the meet.   Also this meet, D1 is in charge of concessions, D2 is to help with set up, and D3 is in charge with tear down.  You should have received notice from your parent reps regarding helping out.   If you were missed, please contact them:   D1 Leslie and Chris Finton at fintons@comcast.net,  D2 is Terry Cumins at terrypsu@yahoo.com, and D3 rep Mechteld Hillsley at mechteld@engr.psu.edu.   Thanks again to the reps for their help!   Please also bring in your drinks if you haven’t already done so.  We are especially in need of water.

 Late Night at the YMCA:

We will have our annual Late Night at the Y on January 16 from 8-11pm.   This is always lots of fun.  There will be basketball, open recreation in the rec room, rock climbing, swimming, and the always much-anticipated underwater coin toss hosted by Steve.  He has informed me that he has been hoarding his change for the past year and is ready to go!   I will need a few parents to stay and help.   This will include sign-in/emergency contact, general supervision, and helping set up for pizza/party snacks.  Let me know if you can help at jkoberna@stompit.net.

 Champs and Districts:

I would like to quickly review general information about KSYL League Championships and West District Champs for those of you who are new.   League Champs will be held on February 20 in Dubois.  Anyone can participate in league champs.  Awards will be given.   West Districts will be held March 13-14 at Indiana University of PA.  Swimmers need to qualify by making “district times.”  These times are posted on our bulletin board, and are on-line.  Under Best Times on-line and on the bulletin board, you will also see the word “District” next to your child’s time.  Qualifying for this meet is a goal throughout the swim season.  The meet is lots of fun and a great experience for the swimmers.   The top 12 swimmers from each event at Districts then qualify to compete at the States Championships on March 20-21 here at PSU.  (more to follow – we need everyone’s help that weekend!)  For Districts we have reserved 15 rooms at the Blairsville Hampton Inn for the 12th and 13th for those who would like to stay overnight.   The rooms are $99.00 per night (down from $114.00) for 2 queen beds and are under the “State College Area YMCA.”   Their direct phone number is 1-724-459-5920.  Juniors (13-14) will be swimming Saturday morning, Seniors (15-18) Saturday afternoon.   Cadets (10 and under) will be swimming Sunday morning and Preps (11-12) Sunday afternoon.    Google West Districts YMCA Swim Championships for more information.  Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Trophy Case and Bulletin Board

You have probably noticed the new bulletin board and the improvements being made to our little corner of the Y.   We are also expecting delivery of our new trophy case tomorrow.   These are wonderful ways to showcase the team’s accomplishments and build camaraderie.   A huge thanks to Karen Myford and Heather Jordan for taking on this project and doing such a great job!

I think that is all for now.   Again, feel free to contact me with suggestions, questions, or concerns.   Thanks to everyone for chipping in.

We will begin taking sign ups today for our home dual meet with Juniata Valley this Saturday.  Coaches will be asking the swimmers at practice; parents can email me yes or no about your swimmers.

Thanks to Volunteers for Clearfield MeetThanks to everyone who helped out at the Clearfield meet this past weekend at SCAY.   I could not be there, but understand that the SCAY parents pulled together and did our work plus the lion’s share of the Clearfield jobs.  Thank you!!!!Billing for Invitational MeetsI just want to remind everyone that SCAY is paying for invitational meet entries this year.  (Notice that you no longer include a check with your meet entry forms!)  They often run as high as $4.00 per entry.  So if your swimmer swims 4 events, it could cost our team $16.00.  This is a wonderful benefit for our families, but you must show up if you sign up.  If you do not show up to the meet, you are expected to pay for these entry fees, as we have already paid the host team to enter your child.   Our last invitational is at Hollidaysburg next weekend.  Please expect to be post-billed if you have missed any invitationals you signed up for.  (Williamsport, Bloomsburg, Hollidaysburg). That’s all for now.   Best of luck to the swimmers this Saturday.   As always, don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.Jenny

Good Tuesday Morning:

Practice Cancellation
In anticipation of the weather coming our way I will not hold an organized dryland workout tomorrow morning.
Hollidaysburg Invitational
The entry information, which I will post on our bulletin board today, indicates swimmers may enter a total of five events, which includes relays.  My hope is that all entered swimmers will want to participate in the relays, which are mixed and should be fun.  So, list five individual entries on your form in order of preference.  As I enter swimmers in relays I will take off individual events from the back end.
SCAY/Dubois Entries
My hope is that all swimmers entering this Saturday's meet at Dubois (Arrive 11:15; warm-ups 11:30; meet Noon), will have done so by the end of practices tomorrow.

1:00/100 Club
Last year I started a club that awards those who come into the Fall/Winter season over a minute in the 100 free and go under that benchmark during the season.  It is just for the 100 free.  So far this year we have three in the club:  Kelly Miller, Ayla Ross, Ian Schrock.  At the end of the season each member will receive a $5.00 gift card from Cold Stones.
Attachment
Evidently I forgot to include an attachment on my message from last week.  I will make sure it is attached on this.  It is for the Hollidaysburg Invitational on December 19.  You must use our Meet Sign Up forms, located in the lobby.  Remember, no entry fee check is required.  The Sign Up form is new (thanks to Carline Feffer), so read carefully and complete all requested information.  Entries are due in the Meet Entries folder by the end of practices on Friday.  Entry information is also located on the bulletin board in the lobby.   Click here for the info!

*Once again this year, there have been some fake, rather juvenile volunteer entries posted on the website as a joke.  This happened early in the season last year; then we were fine.   If you have any reason to think this may be the work of your child, please mention to them that this is not a good thing.   It creates more work for the volunteers, who are already working hard and trying to help make the swim meet run smoothly for the team.  We could create a password, but it would be one more barrier to volunteering, and a motivated child would likely soon gain access to that as well.  Hopefully, the culprit got it out of their system, consideration and responsibility will now prevail, and I will not need to mention this again.  Thank you for addressing this.

Again, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jkoberna@stompit.net  or call at 466-6163.

Have a good week,

Monday, November30, 2009

Good Monday Morning:

Clearfield Dual Meet

We have our first KYSL dual meet this Saturday, hosting Clearfield.  We will begin taking sign ups this afternoon.  Now, what happens at practices is that the coaches ask if the swimmer will be in the meet.  We will also ask what events they want to swim in order of preference.  If we place the swimmer in one or two relays, we will not enter them in their least preferred events.  Parents, you can email me yes or no for your swimmer.  I ask that you only email me about the upcoming meet, not, as one parent once did:  "My swimmer will be in all meets this year."  If you have emailed me about this meet, please do so again.

Meet Event

Each meet we have a Meet Event, in which all SCAY swimmers will be entered.  This week the Meet Event will be the 100 free.

All Events

My goal each year is to have swimmers swim all events offered in their age group at least once during the season.

Relays

If possible, each swimmer will participate in at least one relay each meet.  Sometimes they will be in two as this is a numbers game.

Warm ups/Meet Start

Our warm ups begin at 8:00.  Everyone should arrive by 7:45 to check in with their coach and get ready to be in the water at 8:00 sharp.  The meet will begin at 9:00.

High School Swimmers

There is no high school meet this Saturday, so all high school swimmers are expected to participate in our meet.  They will be entered in the maximum of four events.

Didn't Sign Up?

Sometimes swimmers don't get signed up (forgot, other activities that get cancelled).  If a swimmer shows up for one of our dual meets and didn't sign up, we will get them in the meet.  I cannot guarantee relays.

Not On The Entry List?

It is not uncommon that a swimmer who did sign up gets left off the entry list, which will be posted in the lobby.  Don't panic.  Simply let me know and we will get you in the meet.  Again, I cannot guarantee relays.

More as it comes up.

SCAY News – November 20, 2009

A few housekeeping items:

 Medals and Awards:

Please find medals and ribbons from the last 2 invitationals in your folder at the Y.  Typically, the coaches pick these up at the end of the meet and a volunteer gets them into your folder within the next several days.   There are no awards given for regular season duel meets.

Web Site:

Ken Hillsley has updated the website to include meet results from each meet, best times for the season, and times needed to swim in the West Districts meet this year.   Check it out.  Thanks, Ken!

Bulletin Board:

You have probably noted some exciting changes to our SCAY bulletin board, and you will be seeing more in the near future.   Karen Myford has been working on this, and has started by posting pictures from each meet.   Our loyal photographer, Barb Smith, has been providing most of the pictures, but was not able to attend the Bloomsburg Invitational.  If you have any pictures from the Bloomsburg meet for Karen, please contact her at Myford4@comcast.net.

 Volunteering On-line

When you get a few moments, please look at your schedule and commit to volunteer for our upcoming meets.   Many families volunteer every meet, but at minimum, you should plan on helping with at least 3 of our 5 upcoming home meets.   If you are new, good starting jobs are timing, running, and cards.  If you are interested in computers, we need to train extra people to help there, too.   We will show you the ropes!   To sign up, go to www.aqualions.org.   Select “Meet Volunteers”.  Select “pick a meet to volunteer” and select desired meet.  Choose a position and type in your name.  Click “volunteer” at the bottom of the page.   If something happens that you cannot help that date, contact Mary Ellen Hurley at mehurley99@comcast.net or Karen Myford at Myford4@comcast.net.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, suggestions, or concerns.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving,

Jenny

Good Thursday Morning:

Our kids performed well at the Bloomsburg Swim Your Own Age Meet.  I got an email from the Meet Director who told me our "swimmers were OUTSTANDING!"  Swimmer of the Meet is Ian Schrock.  Brendan indicated that the Swim of the Meet was Jordan Hillsley's 100 free.  We had four high point winners:  Alex Hillsley, Jordan Hillsley, Ruth Dangelo, and Sarah Koberna.  Great job everyone!
This Saturday's practice from 11-12 will be held and we will work on relay starts and dolphin kicks off our walls.
Here is the practice schedule for Thanksgiving week:

Dryland practices during Thanksgiving week are cancelled.  We will start dryland again on November 30.
On Monday, November 30th, the D3 group starts practicing Monday through Thursday 4:10 - 5:40 p.m.
On Saturday, December 19, Hollidaysburg will be hosting a YMCA Invitational.  This will be a meet we will enter via Meet Entry forms.  I will get you more information on this soon.

I certainly hope everyone has a fun Thanksgiving.  This is my favorite holiday.  We are having a very good friend and his son in from California (the son goes to Vassar), and Kelli and I are excited.  We are having a few other couples, and I told Kelli to make sure everyone understands that football will be on TV ALL DAY LONG!  And she didn't protest.  How good does it get?!

TO:                  JR/SR Group
FROM:            Steve
SUBJ:              Transition to the High School Season

This is always an interesting time of the year.  As the high school season I regret not being able to work with some of you because you will train with the high school team.  On the flip side I know you guys get excited about the high school season.  Continue to work hard and stop by and see your SCAY teammates once in awhile - and best of luck with the high school season.
Here are some points to remember:

  • For the returning high school swimmers when you have morning only practices during tryouts I expect you to attend SCAY afternoon practices.
  • During tryout week SCAY morning dryland is cancelled.  We will start up again on Monday, November 30.
  • I spoke with Todd and he indicated he and Pete may offer dryland because it may be that NLAC will lose their morning dryland time.  I want you to continue doing your dryland with SCAY on Mondays and Wednesdays.
  • Should Pete and Todd conduct morning swim sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, I expect you to attend these practices.

Remember the following:

  • You need two KYSL meets to participate in KYSL Champs (February 20)
  • You need three YMCA meets (which include KYSL meets) to participate in Districts (March 13-14)
  • You must participate in Districts to participate in States (March 20-21)
  • You need Districts or States to participate in Nationals (April 7-10)

I expect all SCAY swimmers who qualify to participate in all the above meets.

I have mentioned to you that this has been the funnest year I have had at SCAY.  The reason is you guys.  You have come to work and be a team.  Let's keep it going by working hard, supporting your teammates, and staying in touch.

P.S.  Tomorrow is our last practice together before high school season.  I am thinking things round and hot, some with pineapple, some with pepperoni, some with cheese.

SCAY News - November 10 Bloomsburg Meet/Other Misc

SCAY News, November 10, 2009 Thanks to Meet Volunteers:

A big thanks to everyone who volunteered this Sunday at the SCAY Invitational.   Thanks also to those who donated to and worked the concession stand.  I was not there, but understand that you had a large turnout!    For new people, the Saturday morning duel meets are smaller and less chaotic.  They typically begin at 9:00 and are over at 12:00.  (although the swimmers need to be there earlier for warm-ups)

Bloomsburg Meet Directions:  (See Steve’s Shouts today for meet details)Take Interstate 80 to exit 232 (old exit 34) "Buckhorn/Bloomsburg". At the end of exit ramp, turn onto Route 42 South and follow for 1-1/2 miles to route 11 North.
*Take Route 11 North into Town of Bloomsburg where it becomes Main St.
*After passing Bloomsburg Fairgrounds on your right, go approximately 1/3 mile to the intersection of Main and Railroad St.
*Make a right onto Railroad St. and follow to 11th St.
*Make a right at stop sign on 11th St. and follow around to back of middle school and parking lot.
Address is 1100 Railroad StreetEstimated Driving Time: 1 hour and 40 minutes Officials Training:

There will be an officials training course offered at the Bellefonte YMCA for both Level I and Level II on November 21.   Please contact Cory Miller at crmiller@uaja.com  as soon as possible if you are interested or if you would like further information.   No experience is necessary!

 States Date Saver:

We just got word that the Bellefonte YMCA and SCAY swim teams were again selected to host the YMCA State Championships.  This meet will be held at the PSU Natatorium on March 20 and 21, 2010.   I know this is a long way away, but please mark this date on your calendar.   Everyone is expected to volunteer for at least one session, even if your child is not swimming.  It is our biggest money maker of the year.  It is lots of fun, too!

Steph Albert is the Meet Director this year.   She still needs the following chair positions filled:  Volunteer coordinator, flowers, and fundraising.  Please contact Steph at sja150@yahoo.com or me at jkoberna@stompit.net if you are interested or would like to learn more about those positions.

 Found:

Small boys Park Forest froggy suit in the boys locker room.   If this is yours, please contact Shawn Quinn at momquinn@comcast.net.

Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Have a good week,  Jenny

November 10, 2009

Good Tuesday Morning:

  • Thanks to everybody for working at our SCAY Invitational on Sunday.  We had some good swims and, as I tell the kids, this is a starting point for the season, and what we look for is to improve going to our championship meets at the end of the fall/winter season.  I tell my group that our early season meets are like quizzes to gauge how we are doing and our final exams are the championship meets.  In looking at the results I think this quiz went well.  Swimmers of the Meet are Micah Cattell and Annie Liu.  When you look at the results (link below), please ignore District qualifications as these are last year's standards and some have changed this year.  Soon I will get out a Best Time report that will have the current District standards.
  • This Saturday is the Bloomsburg Swim your Own Age Thanksgiving Meet.  Brendan, Nicole and Kate are scheduled to be there.  Warm-ups begin at 10:00 a.m., and the meet begins at 11:00.  Swimmers should arrive at 9:45 and check in with the coaches.  I am attaching our entries file.
  • The only practice change this week will be the D1,2,3 groups will not practice on Saturday.
  • I hope everyone will remember our veterans tomorrow.  My dad served in WWII, and once I was mature enough to realize how important he and his fellow service people are to our country, I thanked him every year on this day.

Everyone have a great week.  I'll be in touch soon.....

SCAY News - November 2 Parent Reps/Volunteering

SCAY News, November 3, 2009

If you are no longer on the SCAY swim team, would like to be deleted from the e-mail distribution list, or would like to update or add an e-mail address, please send me an e-mail to let me know.

 First Home Meet, November 8!

Parent Group Reps:   As most of you know, it seems to take an army to run a good swim meet!   To help spread out the responsibilities, we have organized and divided meet assignments as below so that everyone takes turns helping out with concessions, setting up for the meet, and tearing down after the meet.    Each swim group has a parent representative who will contact members the week of the meet, asking for specific help.  They will provide more information at that time regarding what is needed and when.  Parent reps also serve as an additional resource for new members of the team.   A big thanks to all of the parent reps this year!

Volunteering for Meets:

Our meet volunteer coordinators this year are Mary Ellen Hurley and Karen Myford.   They ensure that all positions are covered so that the meets run smoothly.  Positions needed include timers, card distributors, help with seeding/seating, scorekeepers, and officials.  Please see position descriptions in your parent handbook.

To sign up to help:      Go to www.aqualions.com

Under Main Section on L, select Meet Volunteers

Pick a Meet to Volunteer and select desired meet.

Choose a position and type in your name.

Click “volunteer” at the bottom of the page.

If something happens and you are not able to volunteer that date, please contact Mary Ellen at mehurley99@comcast.net or Karen at myford4@comcast.net.  They can make the changes on the website.     PLEASE sign up as early as you can!     It is very disconcerting and anxiety provoking to the coordinators to see lots of blanks going into the meet.   Also, it makes more work for them to have to find people to fill spots so that we can start the meet.  Volunteering is fun!   You meet swimmers, get to know other parents, and learn more about swimming.  (and the meet seems to go faster!)

 Drink Dontations

If you haven’t turned in drink donations for the season, please get them in this week.  As a reminder:

Please donate once case per each swimmer in their appropriate age groups:

Cubs/Pride:  100% Juice Boxes

D1:  Gatorade

D2:  Water

D3:  Pepsi/Coke/Sprite/ Sierra mist or similar

JR/SR:   Diet Coke/Sprite/Pepsi or similar.

 Aqualaps Donations:

Joan is still accepting Aqualaps Donations.   The box is on the left hand side of the registration desk.

 One More Reminder for Bloomsburg:

Entries are due tomorrow, November 4, for the Bloomsburg Swim Your Own Age Meet.  Forms and information are available at the Y.

I know this is a lot of information, and reading back through it, it seems like we are asking a lot from everyone.   If everyone chips in, it really isn’t bad, especially as we get into the season.   I honestly think that the more involved you become, the more rewarding it is.

Again, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Have a good week,

Jenny

November 2, 2009 (Happy Birthday, Mom -- #90)

Good Monday Morning:

Þ    Today the coaches will start taking sign-ups for Sunday’s SCAY Invitational.  Everyone will swim the IM, so we will be asking the kids what other three events they want to swim, in order of importance, as we may drop the 4th event so they can swim a relay.  Our warm ups are at 12:00 sharp and the meet begins at 1:00.

Þ    Bloomsburg Swim Your Own Age meet entries are due Wednesday, November 4.  You must use our Meet Entry form and place them in the Meet Entry folder.  We are about to switch over to a slightly different ME form, which is why you might find paper copies of our soon to be old form.  These are OK to use.  Make sure you check the meet information for the maximum number events the kids can swim.  Enter your swimmers in the maximum number of events.

Þ    Yesterday’s Halloween Invitational was blast!  I have not received the results yet, and when I do I will get them out to you.  Another thing we are going to do is to send out updated best times after each meet.  Swimmers of the Meet are Kiana Albert for the morning session and Danielle Feffer for the afternoon session.  The Swim of the Meet (not recognized at every meet) is Sarah Dangelo’s 200 free.  She was a stud.  Swimmers of the meet receive a certificate recognizing their performance.  Swimmer of the Meet criteria are, in order:

Team support

Sportsmanship

Best times

Points Scored

Please keep in mind the award is usually subjective.  For yesterday’s morning session we coaches discussed 5 or 6 swimmers.

Þ    As we have in the past, the D3 group will begin practicing from 4:10 – 5:40.  This will take place beginning Monday, November 30.  The D3 group will practice from 4:10 – 5:40 Monday through Thursday.  Friday and Saturday (when there are no meets) will remain the same as they are now.

Þ    I am having a JR/SR Group meeting today.  We will be going over some items that are pertinent to the beginning of the high school season.  We will also be distributing our Property Of Shirts, which look great this year.

Þ    For this Saturday D1,2,3 practice we will be working on two hand turns and breaststroke pullouts.

More as it happens…..

Good Saturday Morning:

Man, or Woman, I just looked in the mirror and it was scary!  Must be Halloween.

I forgot to attach Williamsport entries yesterday, here they are.  I know there will be some changes in the relays, so make sure you check the relays posted in our team area.  And remember, depending on the timing, if a swimmer doesn’t show we may just have to scratch that particular relay.  This is a fun meet.  For those of you who have not been to this meet before it is very crazy at the beginning of the morning session.  Please make sure you keep you kids the team area.

See you all tomorrow.  Go Washington Huskies!

Good Friday Morning:

Þ    If you missed our annual Halloween Costume Contest and Apple Bob last night, you missed a fun event.  Thalia Stout, as a Zombie, won the scariest category; Miranda Myford (as an old man – hey, aren’t I already old?! – running for president) won the funniest category; Ruth Dangelo, as a bag of groceries, won the most creative category.  Then we bobbed for apples.  If I hadn’t called them out of the water I think Phoebe Jordan would still be in the water trying in vain to get her apple.

Þ    We have two meets going on this weekend.  I will list warm up times and meet start times below.  Keep in mind we want the kids to arrive 15 minutes early to check in with their coaches.  I will attach our entries for Williamsport, which we will also post at the meet.  Depending on the timing (it can be crazy) if a relay member doesn’t show, we may have to scratch that relay.
